The Odyssey
In the story of the Odysseus as told Homer Greek values are shown Loyalty, Obedience, and Respect were important cultural norms. These values were revealed in several books. Today we face situations which have the same values. Odysseus’s legend still has relevance in today’s modern world.
Loyalty-Penelope has faith in Odysseus for 20 years. Argos (the dog), after 20 years of waiting, he finally sees his master and dies. Odysseus’s men had loyalty to each other.
Obedience-The suitors had disobeyed Odysseus by listening when he said not to open the bag of wind. In which they did. So now there lost in the middle of nowhere. His wife always did what Odysseus told her to do. She’d always had love for him. Then also when Odysseus had told the suitors, “To not go anywhere, or touch anything because we’re just here for a little break.” So then the suitors didn’t listen. And then they went more into the island of Cicones and slaughtered the sacred cows.
Respect-The suitors don’t respect other’s property and that’s why they get killed by Odysseus. Or when Cyclops didn’t respect the suitors and that’s when Cyclops got his eye pocked out. Also when the men of Ithica don’t respect Odysseus; they try to take his place by getting married with Odysseus’s wife. And when then men have sex with Odysseus’s maids.The Odyssey is a legend which reveals many of the Greek values. Loyalty, Obedience and Respect are found in many stories. Today we can find values in the world. The influence of Greek culture on modern Western people is important.
