The story, "Gift of the Magi", takes place during Christmas. Della & Jim are very poor, and live in a small flat (apartment), but they will take waht is most important to them both and give it away for eachother.
In there small flat, they live on little money. Their expenses are always on top of them, and at the worst of times of the year, Christmas. Also Della's only spending money is one dollar and eighty seven cents.

One dollor and 87 cents was all she had. Her name was Della. Also she had saved up for 4 months and now she ony had 1.87. She had the beautiful long hair that was down to her legs, that a queen could not have
It was all most time for christamasand she did not have a gift to give her husband. Also she did not have a lot of money.To by a present.

When he walked into the house he looked thin and very serious.He needed a new coat.
Also gloves. When he seen his wife hair his response was discreet.

Theme
The theme of this story is really realistic in alot of ways. Ther is this couple and their names are Jim James Dillingaham Young and Della James Dillingham Yound. In this story you can tell that these two are so in love wit each other.
They lived in a, what seems like a tidy home. They both have something caluable to them in which they took a mighty pride in. Jum had a gold watch which had been his father's and grandfather's. Della took pride in her hair. It was long, probably to her knee. She loved her hair it was very pretty.
The couple were so eager to buy their loved one something they've wanted. But they didn't have enough money for it. Since they are both so wise that they both decided to give up the most valuable thing in their possession. Della went and cut her beautiful long hair and sold it for twenty dollars. Also, Jim sold his gold watch to get enough money to buy the expensive set of combs that Della had always wanted.
When they both got home Della was so worried on what her husband would think of her hair. But when he walked in he just starred at her and she couldn't tell what his expression was trying to say. But when they both found out on what they had done, they just decided to put it away because it was to nice to use at present.
The moral of the story is that no matter what you have you should still cherish it because you never know what the future might hold for the two of you. The only gift you can give a person is your heart with a key. The only thing they need is love and that's what this couple has. They both have each other.

Summary
In the story "Gift of the Magi" Della and Jim were a very poor couple living in an apartment. It was Christmas Eve and they both wanted to get eachother gifts.
Della had only $1.87 and didn't have enough to get Jm the fob chain. She had no way of getting it to him unless she sold her hair. So the fact and the amount of love she had for him shw would sell it. So she did. She received $20 for her hair and now has $21.87 and bought the fob chain and went back to the apartment.
Jim had a watch that was passed down many generations and that was the only valuable thing he had. So he decided to sell it which gave him the money to buy a gift for Della. Sowith his money he went to go buy her combs for her hair which is now gone.
They both sold their most valuable things which areDella's hair and Jim's watch. The fact that they sold it, there would be no point of the gift anymore because Della's hair was sold and Jim's gift were combs. Also Della's present was a fob chain for Jim's watch but was sold.
They showed their love by selling their own valuable items so they can see a smille on one's face. At the same time senseless because their presents are worthless but meaningful of the way they got the money to buy it. As long as they are together they are happy.

The theme of this story is not being selfish. That's its always great to give and not recieve. You make the other person feel good just like Della did when she saved her money for months to get her husaband something.
She wasn't being greed about what she did just to make her husband happy. ske knew it would please him. You can't be greed in this life because then no one will do any thing for you.

She got home and quickly turned on th e curling iron and curled what she had left of hair.She had the coffee readyt by 7 o'clock.As she held the chain in her hand she sat at where she always sits, at the corner of the table nearest to the door where james comes in.

He walked in and had an odd expression on his face.Della could not figure out what it was for.So quickly she told hinm thta it was mereley a hair cut and that it would grow back.
James told her that no hair cut would make him like his girl any less.he pilled out a package from his jacket and told her to open it.it was the combs that she had been wanting frome the broadway shop.She new that they were very expensive!

She kept on reapeating to herself, what am I gonna buy for Jim with $1.88? SO she went around town to see what she wanted to buy for her husband? So she saw a chain for Jim. She said that ti was exactly for him and made just for Jim. But the only thing was that it was $20.00.
Then she went to a store and a lady said "You have beautiful long hair" Della replied "Thank You." The lady said that she would cut it off of her for $20.00. So Della agreed to cut her hair to buy Jim the chain. So she went home and Jim walked in with Dellas Christsmas present, Jim had saw Dellla had cut her hair really short! Jims expression was down and depressed. Della said "Please Jim don't be sad, I cut my hair to buy you a present!"
Then Jim said "Here open your present"..... Della opened it and her face just wanted to burst into to tears. Dellas present was expensive combs, different kinds. Then Della said "Here open your present", Jim opened it! Della told Jim to put the chain with his grandfathers watch and Jim told her "I sold mt watch to buy your combs." The story of the Gift of the Magi was about a couple who was very poor. At first the started off only with one dollar and eighty-seven cents. They saved pennies, one by two at a time by bull dozing the grocer and the vegatable man. Della counted 3 times. One dollar and eighty-seven cents was whta she counted. The Dillingham had been flung to the breeze during a fromer period a fromer period of prosperity when its prossessor was being paid 3o dollars per week. Della had been crying. She also cryed becaude she only had one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy Jim a present. Many happy hours she had with planning somthing for Jim.She wanted something fine and rare and sterling-something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honor of being owned by Jim. Then Della cut her hair. Then she knew it was worth 20 dollars. So she went around the stores loking for somthing valuable like a platinum fob chain. So a lady bought it off for 20 dollars and with that money she bought the chain. It was about the same amout. Della went home with a little bit of cash. She wrapped the gift. Then she gave it to Jim and he said nothing! Della asked wheres the watch? He responded, "I dont have it because i sold it to buy your combs!" THE END!!!
